Is a Sam's Club membership worth it just for gas? ›

For some people, getting a wholesale club membership is a smart way to save some cash. But if you're getting the membership just so you can buy cheap gas, you might want to reconsider. Ask yourself how often do you actually go to Sam's Club to fill up your car. If it's not often, it might not be worth it.

While both Costco and Sam's Club offer unleaded, premium, and diesel fuels (here's how to know which you should be getting), only Costco offers Top Tier fuel. If you don't have a Costco membership, you can still find Top Tier gas at other stations. “Yes, Top Tier gas is worth the extra money,” CarFax reported.

Gasoline sales at Costco make up about 10% – or $20 billion – of all sales. For Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club, it's about 9%. But what's the trick? How can gas prices be so much cheaper there?

Since pumping gas is an open-end purchase, gas stations will typically pre-authorize your payment card for a larger amount to ensure that your card has enough funds to cover the amount of gas you'll leave with.

Sam's Club Gas: What You Need to Know

Sam's Club has its own fuel stations where members can save on average 7–10% every time they fill up. Each station serves regular, premium, and diesel gas.

Senior (55+) Membership Discount

Sam's Club wants to give back to seniors, 55 years or older by offering seniors a special membership offer. Qualified seniors who join Sam's Club online as a new member will receive a 60% discount on a Club membership or $50 off a Sam's Club Plus membership.

If you use cash, you eliminate the credit card surcharge and you end up paying the lower advertised price. Some gas stations are actually required to put the credit card price as the advertised price on their signs. Some also put “Cash” next to the price on the signs to let consumers know that it's the cash price.

If the debit card is attached to an account that does not have sufficient funds, and if there is no overdraft protection on the card, the transaction will simply be declined and the gas pump will not release any gas.

If you prepay too much for gas with a credit card, you will only be charged for the purchase amount and the remainder of the prepaid amount will not be charged to your card. The gas pump will stop when you reach the prepaid amount or when the tank is full.
